After graduating in Fine Art from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) in 2003, Amie Antoniak finally became able to finalise her plans for 'Artfulness', the dream she had set her sights on whilst in her second year of university.
For two years after graduation, Amie worked in various disparate professions from receptionist to teaching assistant, utilising any free time to develop a firm business plan. After obtaining secure financial backing, and locating a suitable venue in York's city centre, a stone's throw away from the Minster and the majority of York's visitors, Amie set to work making the art gallery and café dream a realisation.
"I wanted my gallery to be different from all other galleries, which I have found in the past to be very intimidating, daunting and pretentious. I wanted a gallery that was friendly, approachable and relaxed- both to artists wanting to exhibit and the visiting public."
From the appreciative comments and feedback Amie has already received from visitors, 'Artfulness' has been able to achieve just this. With a friendly, welcoming and affordable gallery, the café enhances this atmosphere, encouraging artists and locals to meet, chat and enjoy the artwork on the surrounding walls.
Amie has also been invited to take over ROTA (Return of the Artist), founded by local artist Milladdio, which aligns itself perfectly with the principles of 'Artfulness'. ROTA aims to secure exhibitions for local artists by working in conjunction with a selection of the city's bars and restaurants willing to showcase the work of York's rising artistic talent.
Whilst still a small local gallery, a treasure for York's local community and abundant visitors, Amie aspires to allow 'Artfulness' to grow into a strong and thriving art gallery, an exceptional resource and facility for York's artists and art buyers.
