Training Events
Kodaly Methodology Training
For Music Practitioners and Primary School Teachers
As well as helping non-specialist Primary School teachers to deliver the National Curriculum for Music using Kodály methodology, and providing sustainable skills for teachers and pupils, this course will deliver enhanced employment potential for music practitioners and includes practical music making ideas.
The Kodály method is the practice of and belief in musicianship development through singing. Much emphasis is placed on unconscious learning which is later made conscious. The procedures include building a “song bank” from which other learning can be based, utilisation of playground games and action songs (to develop co-ordination), and basic voice production. Unlike other methods this system of learning provides sustainable skills using an international musical language, invaluable to music leaders and students alike.
The MusicLeader Yorkshire and NOEL Kodály course is being led by Judith Brindle, who was formally a primary music advisory teacher in Bradford, a lecturer in primary music at Trinity + All Saints University College Leeds and who is an experienced practitioner and member of the British Kodály Academy. It will be co-hosted by Nicky Woods, music specialist for North Yorkshire LEA, advisory teacher for the Voices Foundation and tutor for the British Kodály academy.
All practitioners places have now been filled on the course for this academic year. However, if you are interested in registering for information for the 08 – 09 academic year, please email yorkshire@musicleader.net and we will put you on a priority mailing list.
Music and Learning Disabilities training Programme
MusicLeader Yorkshire, along with Cube Media and Accessible Arts have developed an exciting new scheme for music leaders interested in working with adults with learning difficulties. The scheme is designed to give participants ‘hands-on’ experience of working with people with learning difficulties, as well as equipping them with the necessary skills to work with this group. Participants on the scheme will commit themselves to a term long placement with one of the following groups:
Hands and Voices
Hands and Voices is a singing and signing choir made up of adults with learning and associated disabilities. The choir gives regular performances across the country, as well as writing and creating their own large scale productions. The choir is run by a committee of members, who also co-ordinate the Hands and Voices Training Programme; the first scheme in the country to train learning disabled adults as workshop leaders.
On a placement with Hands and Voices, you will be expected to attend regular rehearsals on Wednesday evenings and any performances during the term. You will take part in the preparation of a performance, supporting the members with singing, signing and drama. No previous experience of signing is necessary.
SoundWeavers
The SoundWeavers are a group of adults with mild learning difficulties who write and perform their own music using accessible music technology, including MIDIcreator and Soundbeam. Like Hands and Voices, the SoundWeavers give regular performances as well as leading workshops to demonstrate this technology to others. On a placement with the SoundWeavers, you will be expected to attend regular rehearsals on Monday evenings, as well as any performances during the term. You will join the SoundWeavers in creating their own sounds and music for a performance.
As part of the placement scheme, you will be assigned a learning disabled mentor from your group to support you in rehearsals and help you design a personal plan to decide what you would like to get out of the placement.
In addition to the placement, we will be running four twilight training sessions to help you develop the skills necessary to work with this group. These sessions will include:
Disability Awareness
This session will be led by a group of learning disabled adults from York People First, a local disability advocacy group.
Workshop skills
This will cover the basic skills you need to lead a session, including warm ups and cool downs, group dynamics, and good practice in workshop leading.
Making Information Accessible
This will demonstrate how to produce information in an accessible format that can be understood by those with learning difficulties. It will cover various sign and symbol packages including Widgit, Change, and MAKATON.
Accessible Music Technology
This will be a basic introduction to the technology used by the SoundWeavers (MIDIcreator and Soundbeam), as well as how to use various computer programmes to create a backing track.
The dates for these training sessions are:

MusicLeader Yorkshire and Opera North
Music Ambassadors Project
After a hugely successful pilot programme in 06 -07, we are delighted to announce our Music Ambassadors Project, in partnership with Opera North, will be running again in the 2007-8 academic year. This is a project aimed at offering support and training in skills in music for non-specialist primary teachers and in particular reaching/supporting/partnering schools where there is no music specialist. We are also looking for a small group of early career artists who wish to train alongside the classroom teachers and orchestral musicians from Opera North to improve their knowledge of classroom practice and enhance their workshop repertoire. Participants experience 7 twilight CPD sessions in the spring and summer terms of 2008, focusing on singing and transferable workshop skills, and receive a full resource pack to accompany the course free of charge. Following the training, teachers and trainees will be invited to work together on project proposals which will then be considered by Opera North and MusicLeader Yorkshire and funded if approved.
Aims:
- To build confidence in using music and broader creative activities in the classroom, among non-specialist primary teachers.
- To equip non-specialist teachers with basic tools and skills for the effective leading of music activities with an emphasis upon the voice and singing
- To provide training and experience for young artists and support the development of relationships between those artists and primary teachers
- To create a network of musical ambassadors in primary schools where there are currently no music specialists. These ambassadors will advocate the benefits of inclusion of music in the classroom both during the course and beyond the life span of the project
The cost of the training is £50 for schools and £25 for early career artists (£50 for non MusicLeader members). Places will be allocated to artists based upon submission of an application form and then attendance at an informal interview. Priority will be given to schools where there is currently no music specialist
The deadline for applications from schools and artists is Friday 9 th November 2007, with artist interviews taking place at some point between 5 th and 12 th December 2007. This day will explore advanced techniques and skills of leadership in music workshop and performance contexts. It will look at the skills a leader needs in order to inspire and motivate a team in an inclusive and creative way. Through a range of practical activities, students will lead each other and explore a number of core skills that lie at the heart of good leadership.
Students will take from the day a range of practical activities they can use either as workshop tools, or to enable them to continue to develop their own leadership skills.
Attendees from previous, inspirational days that Tim has led for
MusicLeader in Yorkshire and the North West, should book onto this masterclass to work alongside
Tim again on new and challenging ideas and exercises. If you have not been to one of these sessions
before, then come and experience Tim’s high level, exciting musical leadership for the first
time!
