Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, sometimes referred to as India's equivalent to Pavarotti in the West, will be performing in Leeds on Saturday 12th August 2006 at Carriageworks Theatre in Millenium Square, Leeds. The concert, presented by SAA-uk (South Asian Arts – uk) in partnership with Shrutinandan-UK is part of SAA-uk's ongoing effort to present Yorkshire audiences with high quality Indian music experiences.
Pt Ajoy Chakrabarty is one of the most talented & versatile Classical vocalists in India today. His soft, soothing voice carries an emotional appeal that is said to be unrivalled. He has made a name for himself in the fields of Khayal & Thumri and is one of the leading exponents of the Patiala Gharana.
His musical education began at the age of 3 from his father. His vocal talents were groomed under Shri Kanai Das Bairagi, Pt. Gyan Prakash Ghosh and from 1971 by Ustad Munawar Ali Khan – the son of the great Patiala Maestro, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty will be accompanied by Ajay Joglekar on harmonium & Indranil Bhadhri on tabla. Tickets are £10, £8 concession or £8 each for groups of 4 .
