As is usually the case at this time of the year, we normally take a break over the summer months and after a period of rest, contemplation and serious tanning sessions return with more funk in October. However, this year big changes are afoot with DisOriental and the time has finally come for us to bid farewell to our trusted old friend The Love Apple which has been our home for over five years. After a well-earned break, we look forward to returning after the summer months with bigger, more creative and hopefully much better DisOriental events in Bradford and/or beyond. We are now in the process of looking at new spaces and places to take DisOriental up to the next level and your suggestions and ideas would be most welcome. We would also be very happy to hear from artists, musicians, poets and other creative heads who would like to join us as we look to the future.
Anyhow, we are not going to say goodbye without bang and for that reason we are organising two last DisOriental nights in sync with the Delius Festival over two consecutive weekends before we leave the Love Apple.
SATURDAY July 1st: WEST AFRICAN HIP HOP SHOWCASE featuring PEE FROISS
Shunning their American counterparts' obsessions with gangsters, guns and girls, Senegalese rappers are among the country's loudest campaigners for social justice. Encouraged by the likes of Youssou N'Dour and already the vanguard of West Africa's explosive hip-hop scene, their voices are only going to get louder in the run-up to the elections in 2007 when President Abdoulaye Wade is widely expected to seek re-election. He may need their help!
Dakar is quickly establishing itself as the capital of African Hip Hop and now boasts the largest number of Hip Hop crews of any city on the continent. In recent years, many like Daara J have made into the global limelight, quickly being snapped up by forward thinking western record labels looking for the next new sound in urban music. Pee Froiss represents the cream of that crop and we are very fortunate to have them at DisOriental as they take a slight detour up north to Bradford between gigs at the Jazz Cafe and supporting the Ziggy Marley tour. Since forming in Dakar in 1993, Pee Froiss have
made their mark on the global music scene. Their lyrics, delivered in a mix of Wolof, French and English reflect the flavour of a post-colonial nation state and celebrate its vibrancy. Pee Froiss have assimilated the fundaments of hip-hop and reggae only to better integrate them into a distinctly African blend. The group speak for those without voices - moral guides for a disaffected youth torn between the traditions of their forefathers and the global currency of MTV and fast food. Pee Froiss have even been dubbed an African Public Enemy. The two MCs Xouman and Koc 6 are aided and abetted by DJ Gee Bayss sure-fire turntablism.
In true DisOriental tradition of giving up and coming local bands a spot light, Pee Froiss shall be supported by the Riddimtion Band. All the way from France via Sheffield, Riddimtion is the most popular reggae soundsystem in Sheffield and has evolved from doing regular warehouse parties into a fully fledged live french/english reggae act, mixing elements of Roots, Dancehall and Hip Hop. We welcome them wholeheartedly, along with some other surprises up our sleeves...
SATURDAY July 8th: DisORIENTAL and TRAINER TROUBLE host THE DELIUS FESTIVAL CLOSING PARTY
Bradford's top two club nights will be joining forces to bring the Delius Festival to a funk-fuelled close. Featuring MANDALAYO, a five piece Afrobeat/Funk/Jazz outfit and LIVEWIRE, a live instrumental Funk band. The two bands along with DisOriental and Trainer Trouble DJs will be bringing a heady cocktail to the dance floor that fuses Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz and World Music.
We look forward to seeing you lookin' good on the dance floor on both nights!
