Get Sorted Academy of Music is a community based music project and registered charity working with children, young people and adults from all areas, using music to reach out to everyone in the community, whatever their needs and background.
Get Sorted was founded in 1995 by Genya Johnson, to support and encourage young people using the streets as a leisure time activity. The idea soon developed into a dynamic approach to engage young people and create a new sense of direction in their lives. From these humble beginnings, the project has grown and currently supports around 500 children and adults a week. The new premises mean that Get Sorted can reach even more young people and extend their services to adults of all ages!
Get Sorted uses music as a hook of engagement and provides professional music tuition to small groups, large groups and on a one-to-one basis. At Get Sorted, children and young people enjoy learning the guitar, drums, singing, music technology, woodwind, brass, composing, music theory and song writing. By providing a wide range of learning, training, education and employment opportunities in addition to recreational activities, Get Sorted aim to motivate, re-engage and empower young people, in the caring, welcoming and relaxed environment of the Get Sorted Academy.
In June 2005, Get Sorted Academy of Music celebrated its 10th Anniversary and in September 2005, they moved to newly refurbished premises in the former Wellington Boot pub in Rotherham's town centre. New rooms, new spaces, new groups and new activities to suit everyone!
In addition to the junior clubs during the week, there are after school activity clubs for students wanting to try out a range of different music instruments e.g. boom whackers, drum shapes, ocarinas and percussion from other cultures. Young people can get involved in musicals, drum circles, making CDs, performances, recording, multi media and can also enjoy taking part in a variety of arts and crafts.
Get Sorted also provides a firm grounding for those who want to establish a career in music; Rock School examinations or Associated Board of Music qualifications. There is also the opportunity to gain an OCN qualification in multi media or an Expressive Arts Award.
Get Sorted is an ideal place to meet new friends, learn new skills, try out a variety of musical instruments, and offers a perfect setting for young people to learn about music in a working environment.
The Get Sorted project has received two Royal Charters for its work, a BURA award for community regeneration and the Rotherham Partnership Excellence in Community Achievement award.
