24 artists from the North of England have been nominated by 12 leading curators in the search
for the first winner of the new Northern Art Prize. The long list includes 6 artists groups plus 8
female and 10 male individual artists whose practices range from painting, photography,
installation, video and performance.
A national panel of artists and arts professionals will select a short list of four this
September 2007. Their work will be exhibited at the newly refurbished Leeds Art Gallery from 22
November 2007 until 10 February 2008, and the winner announced on 17 January 2008. The prize-winner
will receive GBP 16,500. Each of the three runners up will receive GBP 1,500.
Arup, the global firm of designers and consultants, join Logistik Ltd and Leeds City Council
in their support of the Northern Art Prize. Colin Harris, Director of Arup, says, “With a strong
track record of involvement in large-scale public art projects, we are delighted to support the
Northern Art Prize to celebrate northern artistic talent and highlight the importance of diverse,
inclusive and vibrant culture to the continuing renaissance of northern cities.”
Pippa Hale, Director of the Northern Art Prize, which is based in the city of Leeds, spoke
about the nominations. ‘We’re really pleased with the long listed artists for 2007. There’s a great
range of practices and media represented and it just goes to show how much talent there is in the
north. Identifying a short list is going to prove a real challenge for our 4 judges.’
