Creative North Studios is a world leader in mobile entertainment and have pioneered a number of
firsts in our field. Recent titles have included many high profile sporting and classic brands
delivered to mobile. Our studio is currently moving into Nintendo DS development as such the
successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on this platform.
Reporting into the Development Manager / Producer, the J2ME/Brew programmer's role will be in
the reference development of mobile games.
The ideal candidates will:
- Be an Honours graduate in Computing Science (or Software Engineering)
- Have knowledge of software development tools and techniques relating to building releases,
version control, testing, and debugging
- Have practical experience of game development using J2ME and/or C++
- Have good communication skills and an ability to work both as part of a team and on your
own
- Have an awareness of mobile games and games industry in general
Essential responsibilities will be:
Projects – actively participate in all stages of a project life cycle in conjunction with the
full project team. Ensure teamwork with design, art, QA, etc. This includes pre-production (project
feasibility), game development (accurate estimates, features implemented as requested), and
conversion (porting to multiple devices/platforms). Ensure all project deliverables are maintained
to appropriate standards.
Software Development Processes/Practices – understand and apply 'best practices'. This
includes use of Coding Standards (to ensure ease of porting), ease of localisation, build process,
version control, bug tracking, test & debug techniques, and software design and development.
Software Development Tools & Languages – be competent in the use of all tools and
languages used in game development. This includes J2ME, BREW/C++, Subversion, Ant, and IDE
(Eclipse, Visual Studio). Stay abreast of new development tools/technology applicable to mobile
game development and apply as appropriate.
Game Tools & Technology – Develop a broad understanding of existing game tools &
technology and contribute to ongoing re-usability.
Business Goals – gain an understanding of different business units, their customers, goals,
deliverables, and key dates (e.g. roadmap). Be capable of using this knowledge to plan-ahead,
assess impact, synchronise & prioritise efforts, and identify red flags.
